Informed sources point out that for the next R&AW Chief, there were as many as five officers in fray including two from outside the organisation.

Anil Dhasmana has been named the new chief of India’s spy agency RAW, which looks after intelligence-gathering from foreign lands.

The government on Saturday appointed new chiefs to the Research and Analysis Wing and the Intelligence Bureau.

Jain, who is at present Special Director in the IB, will take over on 1 January after incumbent Dineshwar Sharma completes his two-year tenure on 31 December. Anil Kumar Dhasmana is a 1981 batch IPS officer.

Before his promotion Rajiv Jain was serving as a special director of the intelligence bureau, he was given apex pay scale of Rs 80,000, thus removing an anomaly in his salary in July 2015.

Dhasmana has been with RAW for the last 23 years during which he has served on important desks including Pakistan.

He has served with the RAW in major desks including London, Frankfurt and Pakistan. Jain is a 1980-batch Jharkhand-cadre officer.

In the case of intelligence bureau, Dineshwar Sharma had reportedly refused the offer of an extended tenure.

He is now serving as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau and will take over from Dineshwar Sharma on January 1.
